SAESM is one of the most prestigious academic events in the whole South Asia Region. It is an international conference where students from renowned universities of the sub-continent present research papers of their own based on topics which deal with various economic issues of the society. They also take part in other activities like quiz competition and panel discussion. There is also a competition called “Budding Economist” where a student goes through a series of written tests in the preliminary rounds and then in the final stage faces an interview taken by peers from different universities in an audio visual round.
The record of Department of Economics of University of Dhaka in SAESM is truly an illustrious one. From the 1st SAESM held in Delhi to the last one also held in Delhi, each year students of our department have clinched several remarkable victories. Some names which need to be mentioned are Biplab Kumar Datta who won the prestigious Budding Economist competition in SAESM 08 held in Delhi and Fahim Hassan who holds the rare record to achieve two successive victories in the paper presentation in 4th and 5th SAESM held in Colombo and Delhi respectively. Both of their papers have also featured in the book published by University of Colombo which includes all the best papers from the participating countries in the 4th SAESM. Due to the commendable success achieved by students of our department, Bangladesh is considered as a powerhouse in each year’s SAESM. The Department of Economics of University of Dhaka has also proudly staged the 3rd SAESM and our hospitality was greatly appreciated by our fellow competitors and respected peers from neighboring countries.

Along with expanding the students’ capabilities outside the boundaries of textbooks, in courses and exams, SAESM also helps to create bondage and a feeling of brotherhood between the students of countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal etc. This is of great importance as the friendship between them can go a long way to resolve the problems faced by the people in their own countries and also can pave the path for the progress of this sub-continent. Students can also experience the cultural heritage of different countries, visit places of historical significance and natural beauty and enrich their knowledge about the world.
